This Week We Have Learnt...

Summer 2: Week 5

This week has been very busy! Year 5 has their transition day with Mrs Edwards and Mrs Poole at the beginning of the week. They created some amazing pieces of art inspired by circles. They also created their own scavenger hunt.

On Wednesday it was sports day! The children had an amazing time competing against each other, and we ended the day with a family picnic and summer fayre.

In Geography, the children created a speech about all the ways that humans use the Mojave Desert.

We ended the week with a dress rehearsal of our summer play, ready for showtime next week!

Summer 2: Week 4

This week we have been completing our end of year assessments in Maths and Reading.

In French, we explored the months of the year and learnt a song to help us remember each month.

Our spelling focus this week was homophones. As a class, we came up with different creative ways to remember the difference between homophone meaning and spelling.

In reading, we explored a non-fiction text based on Jonnie Peacock, a Paralympic athlete. The children enjoyed reading about the challenges he overcame in his youth.

Summer 2: Week 3

This week, Year 5 have been busy and enthusiastic across the curriculum. In Maths, we explored the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, identifying their sides, vertices, edges and faces with growing confidence. The children enjoyed sorting and comparing shapes, using their knowledge to explain what makes each one unique.

In Writing, we finished our polished version of a formal letter to address an environmental problem. The class worked carefully on improving their vocabulary, punctuation and tone so their letters sounded thoughtful and persuasive.

In Geography, we explored the physical features of the Mojave Desert and learned about its hot, dry landscape, including mountains, valleys and rocky areas. This helped us to understand how different environments are shaped.

In French, we learned the days of the week and practised saying them aloud with confidence. We also continued working on spelling by learning words with silent letters.

In science, we investigated reversible and irreversible changes. A real highlight was our competition to see which pair could melt their ice cube the quickest, which helped us think about changing states in a fun and practical way.

Summer 2: Week 2

This week, the children have been working really hard across the curriculum and should be very proud of their progress. In English, we have been exploring letter writing, creating a story map for our model text and researching world issues. The children have shown great thoughtfulness and have enjoyed sharing their ideas clearly and confidently.

In Science, we conducted an experiment to test whether we could separate mixtures using filtering or sieving, and the children impressed us with their careful observations.

In Maths, we have been exploring different strategies to add, subtract and multiply decimals. The children have approached this with growing confidence and perseverance.

We also began to consolidate numbers to 31 in French and have been busy practising our song and dance for the summer play.

Summer 2: Week 1

Year 5 have been busy this week with a wonderful range of learning experiences. In Forest School, the children built waterproof shelters and worked brilliantly together to test their designs. They also observed our class caterpillars, Jaquavius and Cally, in the first stage of their life cycle, showing great curiosity and care. In science, we conducted an experiment to find out whether different substances were soluble or insoluble, using careful observation and recording our results. To finish, the children wrote imaginative postcards from the Mojave Desert, bringing their learning to life through creative writing. It has been a fantastic week of teamwork, investigation and creativity

Summer 1: Week 6

This week we have ran a Rhino, Rescue Market in aim to raise £100 to adopt an endangered species of Rhino.

Year 5 has worked incredibly hard this week to create stock, advertise our cause, run the market, and count our funds. Everyone played an important part, from making the items to sell to helping customers and managing the money carefully.

I am delighted to announce that we have raised almost £200! This is an amazing achievement.

In Reading, we have been exploring a fantastic unit of Poetry which the children have thoroughly enjoyed.

Summer 1: Week 5

This week, we have been very busy. In maths, we have been converting units, with a focus on m, cm and km, and the children have shown growing confidence in choosing the correct unit for different measurements. In writing, we have finished our narrative unit inspired by The Nowhere Emporium. The children thoroughly enjoyed this unit, and I have loved reading their stories.

In DT, we have finished creating the base of our house and next week we will be starting our details. In science, we looked at the life cycle of a bird and discussed the stages carefully. In topic, we wrote a diary entry about Queen Elizabeth I’s visit to Worcester in 1575, which helped us bring history to life in a really engaging way.

Summer 1: Week 4

This week the children had afternoon tea with Queen Elizabeth I! We enjoyed tasting tea and scones whilst we entertained her with portraits and jokes.

In DT, we began to create our Tudor houses using cutting tools and cardboard to create the base levels.

In science, we learnt about the life-cycle of a butterfly and created spinners to show each stage.

On Friday we celebrated Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday by learning Happy Birthday on the keyboards. We also learnt more about endangered animals and decided that we are going to raise funds to adopt a rhino.

Summer 1: Week 3

This week in Maths, we completed our unit on translation and reflection. In writing, we created three new characters in preparation for innovating our story next week. In DT, we developed our final design ideas for our Tudor houses, and in History, we explored why Anne Boleyn was executed, with the children taking part in a role-play as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

Summer 1: Week 2

This week we continued to explore the Nowhere Emporium in our reading lessons, which the children loved.

In Maths, we translated shapes across four quadrants, played 'battleships' and 'find the treasure' to practice reading co-ordinates.

In DT we began to map out our design for our Tudor houses.

In Art, the children began to create their mixed-media portrait, using different media to create a unique portrait.

The children loved playing 'who wants to be a millionaire' for our grammar game in writing, where we explored different word classes.

Summer 1: Week 1

This week we welcomed the children back after Easter half-term.

In English, we began our new unit based on the book The Nowhere Emporium. To hook the children in, we practised different magic tricks! We then spent some time creating a story map to help the children remember the model text.

In Reading, our non-fiction unit was based on Ancient Greece. The children were fascinated by the Trojan War.

Our history topic is all about the Tudors. To begin our learning, we investigated who Henry VIII was.

Spring 2: Week 5

This week we have been cooking Hot Cross Buns! We have also been creating poem portraits in Art.

Spring 2: Week 4

This week in Science we have been exploring how babies and children grow.

We did an experiment to test whether boys or girls were taller in Year 5 and compared this to Year 2 girls and boys.

In DT we made calzones, which went down a treat!

Spring 2: Week 3

This week we have been cooking up a storm!

The children practised their claw grip and bridge grip to create a delicious honey, mustard vegetable kebab!

Spring 2: Week 2

This week we participated in a forensic workshop exploring how Forensic Scientists use different methods to help solve crimes.

We were also very lucky to be invited to Pershore High School to watch the first performance of Beauty and the Beast!

On Thursday it was World Book Day! We started the day with a Where's Walley scavenger hunt. We then wrote a letter to Walley to persuade him to change his clothes. We created our own corner bookmarks and did some reading in the sunshine.

Spring 2: Week 1

This week we have been exploring all things spies!

We created an ID card using our new spy identities and investigated which type of fingerprints we have.

In Art, we created a portrait poem inspired by our Oceans topic.

Autumn 1 Week 1

Week 1: We started our exciting Ancient Greek topic. The children dressed up as Ancient Greeks and explored mystery boxes to investigate What was life in Ancient Greece like?

Autumn 1: Week 2

Week 2: This week in writing, we were exploring The Golden Key story linked to our topic. We looked at setting description and how we could upgrade our descriptive sentences.

Autumn 1: Week 3

Week 3: This week the children began learning to play the keyboard!

Autumn 1: Week 4

This week, Year 5 were invited to The Abbey. We were introduced to four scientists who explored the concept of God and the big bang. The children completed three interactive workshops to explore how religion and science can coincide. Overall, it was a lovely day and the children particularly enjoyed the practical activities.

Autumn 1: Week 5

This week in DT, the children began to use a technique called Batiking. They have been designing a Greek-inspired pattern to go onto a tote bag.

Autumn 1: Week 6

This week the children have been researching a holiday destination in Greece. They worked in small groups and created a presentation to persuade the rest of the children to visit their destination.

Autumn 1 : Week 7

This week we explored Ancient Greek Myths, particularly Pandora's box. The children participated in a conscious alley exercise where they persuaded Pandora to either open the box, or keep it shut.

They also participated in a PHSE workshop around making the right choices.

Autumn 2: Week 1

This week the children have been creating arrays with maths cubes to look at different representations of multiplication.

We also used drama to support us with our writing. The children created freeze frames based on different vocabulary word cards.

Autumn 2: Week 2

This week the children reflected on the meaning behind Remembrance. We created a class poppy and wrote messages to thank everyone who contributed towards allowing us to live in a safe place.

We also raised money for Children in Need. The children joined in with the rest of the school to take part in Joe Wicks Get Moving Live stream. We moved our bodies and even had a dance off!

Autumn 2: Week 3

This week we were very lucky to be invited down to No.8 to watch How to train your dragon as part of the Into Film Festival!

Autumn 2: Week 4

This week, Year 5 and Year 6 went on an amazing trip to Birmingham to visit the ThinkTank. We explored the human body, space, inventions throughout time and evolution. Last week we explored a city in Austria to find out why people may visit. To compare it to our local area, we took a lovely walk around Pershore to explore what there is to do.

We have also been busy practising our singing ready for The Abbey performance in a few weeks time!

Autumn 2: Week 5

This week we were extremely lucky to visit The RSC to watch The BFG. The children were praised for their excellent behaviour and expressed how much they enjoyed it.

The children have also begun to use a sewing machine to sew their tote bags.

Autumn 2: Week 6

This week the children have been busy making space mobiles to support their learning of the Solar System!

We also have been playing Christmas songs such as Deck the Halls and Jingle bells on the keyboards.

In our writing we have been getting ready to write our Non-Chronological Report on an Arctic animal.

Autumn 2: Week 7

This week has been all things Christmas!

We started our week with an amazing performance at The Abbey. We were very proud of the children's singing and dancing!

We also had a Christmas fun day planned by the friends, which the children loved.

Spring 1: Week 1

This week in Science we have been investigating materials. We used the magnets to explore which materials would attract and which were non-magnetic.

This week we also have appointed a new vice-captain for Cherry House!

Spring 1: Week 2

This week we have been investigating materials. We conducted an experiment to test whether a material was a conductor or an insulator.

We also continued learning about the planets in French!

We had a class debate practising our oracy skills on the statement: "Children should have to go to work."

Spring 1: Week 3

This week we have been investigating thermal insulators. We tested which material would keep our cup of tea warm the longest.

We also used rods in Maths to investigate and identify fractions.

Spring 1: Week 4

This week we had an alien slime explosion in our classroom. We interviewed members of staff to investigate what might have happened the previous night.

The children came up with different questions to ask members of staff. They then took the role of either a camera person, an interviewer or a note taker.

We also were very lucky to have a history workshop all about The Vikings, where the children got to dress up, play old Viking games and practice their sword fighting skills!
