Monday - complete your spelling test before practicing all your sounds using the speed sound chart in the 'A dangerous dinosaur' story (Page 4/5). Once you've warmed up your brain using the speed sound chart, practice reading the red words (Page 8) and green words (Page 6 &18) before reading the story. After completing your first read of the story, try to answer verbally the questions on Page 17.

We are going to complete our 'Hold a sentence' activity today. Read the sentence multiple times before attempting to write it without looking. Once completed mark your sentence against the original. How is your spelling? Have you remembered capital letters and full stops? The children love using their Purple Polishing Pens to mark these sentences so they can take the lead.

Week Beginning 23/11/20 - For those Self -Isolating

 

Monday - Today we are looking at commas in a list. We know that every item in a list must have a comma afterwards except the last two which will have an and or an or between them.

Remember in our focus story we have to list a dog, a cat and a tortoise.

Tuesday / Wednesday - Today we will be looking at speech marks - we have learnt a lot of new punctuation over the last few weeks because our focus text is a little trickier than anything we have learnt before.

Remember speech marks go around what somebody is saying e.g.

"I hope you're completing all of the self-isolating work I'm setting" said Mr Bayliss.

 

There are three activities based on speech marks, the first is an application, the second is related to our story (can you make up what the characters might be saying in our story?) and the third is a LetterJoin activity just in case you fancy it!

 

Thursday - Today we are sequencing 6 pictures from our story and trying to write a sentence explaining each. We are not re-writing the text yet. If you don't have access to a printer, no drama! Just draw the pictures instead. If you're struggling to sequence the story, go back and listen to the book again or look at our class story map.

 

Friday - today we will be beginning to box up our story - I have posted a fill the blank activity for children at home, you just need to add in the word or phrase that's missing (fill in the blank). If you're struggling I have posted the shortened story (the answers) but try to use the story on YouTube and story map to help you first.

Week Beginning 09/11/20 for those children that are Self - Isolating

Tuesday: In today's lesson we will be guessing what our new story is about... we have found a pair of shoes, some glasses and a snake! What do you think the story is about? Can you write a sentence using a because?

Can you research who David Walliams is? Has he written any stories you've read before? Can you find and record lots of facts on him. Have a look at David Walliams' Big Swim!


Thursday: In school we are going to be starting to learn the story through actions and the creation of a story map. At home, using the facts you found out yesterday, can you create a fact file on David Walliams. We completed a fact file on Guy Fawkes last week so this should be a recap! Remember to record the question before answering in a full sentence. 

 

Friday: In today's lesson we will be looking at the last page of the story and thinking about what happened to Mrs Bloat. We are never told where she went but are left to make our own decision (inference). Using the activity posted below, can you write a sentence explaining what you think happened to Mrs Bloat as well as how Miranda might have been feeling at different points in the story. Remember, you won't be told the answer! We have to work it out!

This week in school we are going to be learning about Verbs.

 

In our Monday lesson we will be trying to identify different verbs (doing words) and then acting them out e.g. jumping, skipping, clapping.

 

On Tuesday we will be applying our knowledge of verbs to parrots by watching a short documentary clip and making a note of any verbs we see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4P_NhFlb5w

 

On Thursday we will be taking our verbs from Tuesday's lesson and attempting to put them into some short sentences including the basics e.g. cap letters, finger spaces and full stops.


Finally on Friday we will be taking our sentences from Thursday's lesson and making a short paragraph describing how a parrot moves.

In school we have finished writing the original version of our focus text The Pirates Are Coming. We have then began making changes to this story e.g. our main character Tom, the setting (hill) and our other character (the pirates). We will be writing a description for our new main character this week. For example, if you've changed your character to a rabbit, we are looking for two adjectives (describing words) describing each noun (thing / object) e.g. Thunder (the rabbit) had long fluffy ears. We are then going to be trying to upgrade the opening of our story...

 One day Tom climbed up the hill to look for pirates.

Will become...

One day Thunder climbed up the volcano to look for unicorns. Thunder had long, fluffy ears and...

In school we have just finished 'boxing up' our focus story The Pirates Are Coming (see shortened version the children have been learning / story map). This week we will be writing up this story in our neatest handwriting before making changes to the familiar story using the template provided. Tom could become Fred, instead of climbing a hill he could climb a volcano and instead of searching for pirates he could search for unicorns. 

e.g. One day Tom climbed up the hill to look for pirates.

One day Fred climbed up the volcano to look for unicorns.

The Enormous Crocodile - to be read independently or by an adult (in addition to other reading) over the next few weeks. Activities will be made based on the text, a section at a time,  after the Easter break. Note: The children in Mr Bayliss' phonics group will have already read the first few pages. 

Week Beginning 30/03/20 - During Science Week, Year 2's focus was mini-beasts. We created 'What am I?' riddles based on a mini-beast we found during our hunt.

 

Could you create a What am I riddle for your favourite animal?

 

Monday - With a drawing of your animal in the middle of your page, can you create a spider diagram description of it? Try to concentrate on how your animal looks today. If i was describing a lion I could describe its claws, tail, mane, teeth etc. Remember to try to use two adjectives (describing words) for each part of your animal e.g. sharp dangerous claws.

 

If you choose to describe an alligator, angler fish, brown bear, cat, cheetah, dog, duck, eagle, emperor penguin, goat, hedgehog, horse, lion, macaw, octopus, pug, giant panda, rottweiler, shark, shetland pony, snake, tiger, turtle or wolf and Google the animal's name you can view them in 3D in your own homes or even have a photo with. Feel free to email examples over to go on the website. See photos below.

 

Tuesday - Complete some research on your chosen animal. Where do they live? What do they eat? How do they move? Do they have any special talents? e.g. a spider can spin webs. 

 

Wednesday - Add your research from yesterday to your spider diagram.

 

Thursday - Take your notes from the past three lessons and turn them into clues to guess your animal. Remember you are writing in the first person, you are that animal and are now writing in full sentences e.g. I have sharp dangerous claws.

Note:  If you can, try to order your clues so that only by the end of the riddle are you able to guess the animal. 

 

Friday - Write up your riddle in your neatest joined up handwriting; starting a new line for each new clue. Don't forget to finish your riddle with the question          What am I?

 

Common Exception Words -  Remember to be reading and spelling your Year 2 common exception words as well as practicing your handwriting, in addition to the daily set activities. Handwriting examples and CEW are both in your Home Learning packs.

WB 30/03/20

Over the past few weeks we have been learning the story of Mr Wolf's Pancakes by Jan Fearnley. Can you start to make some changes to this familiar story i.e. characters, basic plot points. Who could you change Mr Wolf to? Who could he be off to visit? What is he trying to make? 

Original answers - Mr Wolf, pancakes, reading the recipe book, Chicken Licken and NO with a slam of the door.

Using the changes you have made from yesterday are you able to recreate the story map? Remember to change the Mr Wolf picture, pancakes, Chicken Licken and reading the story for your new story ideas.
