WEEK 1

Book 1 - Light and shadow:

Focus on the same book throughout the whole week. Each day at the beginning of the Phonics sessions, the children need to repeat the following instructions. Continually practicing the sounds, green/red words and reading the book will help them build fluency and pace:

  • Practice the Set 2 and Set 3 sounds using the link at the top of the page
  • Practice reading the 'Speed Sounds' that are circled (these are sounds used throughout the book)
  • Practice reading all the 'Story Green Words'
  • Practice reading all the 'Speedy Green Words'
  • Practice reading all the 'Red Words'
  • Look at the 'Vocabulary Check' page to check the meanings of new words
  • Read the story

When you've done these steps, work your way through the remaining instructions - these need to be completed just once - pick up where you left off the previous day until you've done them all:

  1. Have a go at answering the questions at the back of the book
  2. Have a go at re-telling the story (verbally) in your own words
  3. Hold a sentence 1: Without looking, independently write the sentence 'Stand in the sun at midday.' Say the sentence to yourself lots of times to help you remember - you can even say it in silly voices like a witch, mouse, robot etc. (Don't forget where capital letters, finger spaces and full stops go, try to join your handwriting and use your Fred fingers to help you sound out).
  4. Tick or Fix - check your work with a different colour (if you have one of the school's packs the children  normally use their 'Purple Polishing Pen')
  5. Hold a sentence 2: 'If the sun is high, the shadow is short.' (follow same as previous instruction)
  6. Tick or Fix your work (same as step 4)
  7. Proofread: Write this incorrect sentence out for your child - 'you can mayk a shadow wiv your hand'

Then ask them to spot the mistakes and edit it with a different colour so it is correct

(Find: 1 capital letter missing / 2 spelling mistakes / 1 full stop)
