Welcome to Year 4!

Who is in our Classroom?

The Year 4 class teacher is Mr Bayliss, with Mrs Hadley as our teaching assistant.
You will find both adults supporting the children in Year 4 every day.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to speak to us at collection time, or alternatively, emails can be sent or meetings can be arranged through the school office.

Communication

We are delighted to let you know that, instead of using Marvellous Me, we will be streamlining our systems. All communication about the class, whether from Mr Bayliss or the school, will now come through our Arbor communication portal, either as a text message or an email.

Reading

The children will take part in daily reading lessons, where they will learn new vocabulary and develop the key comprehension skills expected in Year 4. In addition to this, all children are expected to read regularly at home — at least four times a week — to help practise and embed the skills they are developing in school.

Please note that the way children record their home reading will be changing this year. We will be announcing the new system very soon.

Spellings

Weekly spellings will be sent home every Monday with homework and ‘checked’ (tested) the following Monday. Spellings will be posted on the homework page of our school website and children will also be given a paper copy.

Homework

We will be setting the children homework challenges to complete at home each week. These challenges will include maths, English (either reading or SPaG) and a topic activity. The homework will be added to the homework page on the website and the children will be given a paper copy.

Maths Fluency Targets

Our biggest challenge this year will be readying the children for the Year 4 Times Tables test at the end of the year. We will be practising our TImes Tables as morning jobs multiple times each week as well as learning the new tables in our maths lessons and 'Maths Meetings' sessions. We will be testing the children each week to make sure that they are accessing the appropriate tables for them within TT Rockstars. We want, in addition to the sessions in school, for all children to be practising on TT Rockstars as much as possible! Mr Bayliss will be sharing 'heat maps' with children and parents / carers throughout the year to show which Times Tables may need a little more practice.

PE

This half-term, our PE lessons will be on Wednesdays. Please can we remind you that full P.E kits, with suitable footwear, should always be in school and can be kept on the children’s pegs. Please also ensure that all school uniform and P.E kits are clearly labelled.

Water Bottles

All children need to bring a named water bottle to school each day please.

Internet Safety

A big focus this year will be learning how to stay safe online. Important information and updates will be sent where necessary and the following websites also have lots of information:

We use the child-friendly search engine 'Kiddle' when carrying out research in school and recommend that children do the same when they are online at home (link below). Please make sure you supervise your child while they are online and do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support - the Year 4 Team.
