At Orchard Primary and Pre-school, we believe that cultural capital is a key part of a child’s education.
Cultural Capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a child gains over time through different experiences and opportunities. The children draw upon these in order to thrive in a culturally, socially and ethnically diverse, modern Britain.
By providing a broad curriculum, we aim to develop the children’s understanding of both the modern world and its richly diverse history. Knowledge gained through the curriculum will be supported by the provision of a range of experiences and opportunities that extend beyond those that the children are exposed to in their everyday lives. Through these experiences, the children will learn important life skills that will prepare them to succeed.
We believe that all children should have equal opportunities that will prepare them for a successful future. Pupil Premium Grant funding is used to enhance our cultural capital offer and to ensure that access to this is available equally to all children. We use the funding to support a variety of extracurricular trips and activities, including workshops, educational visits, music lessons and clubs.
There are six key areas of development that are interrelated and cumulatively contribute to a child’s Cultural Capital:
At Orchard Primary and Pre-school, personal development is central to our ethos, reflected in our values of aspiration, responsibility, and kindness. We nurture pupils’ self-esteem and confidence from an early age, ensuring they develop a positive sense of identity and belief in their own abilities. Through our broad curriculum and enrichment activities, including music lessons and performances, children build creativity and resilience. We encourage pupils to set personal goals and develop a growth mindset that prepares them for future challenges. Our wrap-around care and nurturing environment ensure all pupils, including our youngest from age 2, receive consistent support to grow socially and emotionally.
We actively promote social development by fostering collaboration and respect within our small but diverse community. Pupils learn the importance of teamwork and understanding different perspectives through group projects, school events, and community engagement. Our curriculum incorporates age-appropriate discussions on current affairs and British Values, helping pupils become aware of the world beyond their immediate environment. Experiences like dressing as monks at Pershore Abbey link local history to broader social contexts, encouraging pupils to appreciate their place in society and understand democratic principles in an accessible way.
Physical development is encouraged through regular physical education lessons and active play opportunities throughout the school day. We promote healthy lifestyles and physical confidence from our youngest pupils in Pre-school through to Year 6. Our curriculum supports fine and gross motor skill development, ensuring children gain the physical skills necessary for daily life and future sporting activities. We also encourage participation in outdoor learning and active trips, supporting wellbeing and an understanding of the importance of physical health as part of overall personal development.
Spiritual development at Orchard Primary and Pre-school is fostered through reflection, creativity, and connections to the world around us. We provide opportunities for pupils to explore big questions about life, nature, and their own beliefs within a respectful and inclusive environment. Our school’s location near Pershore Abbey and our historical experiences give pupils a tangible connection to heritage and spirituality. Through music, art, and assemblies, children develop an appreciation for beauty, awe, and wonder, which enriches their spiritual growth and personal meaning.
Our school values—aspiration, collaboration, respect, responsibility, and kindness—are embedded in our moral education. Pupils are taught to understand right from wrong and to develop empathy and integrity through daily interactions and focused activities. Behaviour expectations and restorative practices support pupils in making responsible choices and taking ownership of their actions. We promote fairness and social justice, encouraging pupils to contribute positively to their community and society through kindness initiatives and community engagement.
At Orchard Primary and Pre-school, cultural development is achieved by exposing pupils to a rich variety of artistic, historical, and social experiences that broaden their understanding of the world. Our curriculum includes visits and experiences linked to local heritage, and access to music and theatrical performances. We celebrate diversity within our community, including awareness of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures represented in our school. Through these experiences and our inclusive ethos, pupils develop an appreciation of human creativity and achievement, enabling them to engage confidently as culturally aware citizens.
