Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF)

Research has shown that the school holidays can be pressure points for some families, leading to a holiday experience gap.

The HAF (Holidays, Activities, and Food) programme is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and is aimed at enabling children and young people in receipt of benefits-related free school meals (FSM) to attend school holiday activities and experiences during Easter, Summer and Christmas.

The HAF programme supports children to:

    • Access enriching experiences.
    • Stay safe and connected.
    • Be more physically active.
    • Enjoy healthy meals.
    • Remained engaged during school holidays.

    Non-FSM Eligible Families

The main purpose of this programme is to support children and young people from low-income families, with a focus on those who get benefits related free school meals.

Across the HAF programme, up to 15% of discretionary places can be offered to children who are not benefits-related free school meal eligible.

These places are for children and young people who meet one or more of the following additional criteria:

    • Looked after children living in low-income households.
    • Young Carers.
    • Children with an allocated worker who have had an assessment of need.
    • Children living in low-income households referred by school or professional.
    • Children from refugee or asylum-seeking families.
    • Requiring urgent support which has been agreed at funding panel.
