Week 5
What a very, very busy week Year 6! High School Transition days, Sports Day, Summer Fayre, technical rehearsals at Number 8 and we've also managed to squeeze in some actual work as well! Fantastic effort this week Year 6 and we are all very excited about our upcoming show which has really come together this week.
Week 4
This week has been an unusual week with the super hot weather. However, we have completed our hot write about our fictional unicorn, then we started our transition work for Year 7 with some tricky Maths connected to rivers and a Reading task linked to 'Journey to the River Sea', which we read in the first term. The rehearsals are still in full flow and we have started using our props in rehearsals and finalising our costumes.
Stay cool this weekend Year 6's!
Week 3
This week we have been focusing on the play, adding props and more acting into our rehearsals and working with the other classes. We had a visit from Royal Life Saving Society warning us of the dangers of swimming in unknown rivers and lakes and how to keep safe.
In Maths we have been researching and planning an itinerary for a day trip to Cardiff including budgeting and planning a detailed timetable. We have been planning a final piece of polished writing about a mythical creature mixing fact and fiction genres. In Reading we have been studying a book which is written in verse about a boy called Nate in his Final Year of Primary.
The end of our week was spent bell boating on the River Avon and what a glorious day we had! Paddling, walking the catwalk, singing, playing tug of war, spinning around, swapping places, going through the lock twice, splashing, loosing paddles and of course practising for the Regatta next week.
Week 2
Rehearsals have been in full swing this week and we are very impressed at how hard the Year 6's have been working to learn their lines, actions, cues, songs and dances! Remember we are working without scripts starting on Monday.
In Reading this week we have been looking at Grimm's Fairy Tales, trying to understand the old English terms and phrases and identifying the morals of the stories, which the students were very good at. In Maths we have begun our Summer Unit: The Day Trip; investigating, calculating and making decisions about a fun day out for 11 year olds in Cardiff. We have worked out how far away it is and how long it would take us to get there, then explored the activity and attractions options available and where they were in relation to each other. Next week will be all about budgeting and itineraries!
Week 1
Welcome back after a lovely sunny half-term holiday.
We have started our new History topic this week, looking at historical figures that are on our bank notes and their significance. We also started our Science project about adaptations, focusing on animal adaptations during lesson 1. We are also aiming to write a fact-meets-fiction account of a mythical creature in our Talk for Writing lessons over the next few weeks. As usual, we made time for quiet Reading and the children caught up with completing quizzes for the books they have finished.
In Art we have continued to explore the work of a range of artists; this week we focused on Lubaina Himid and her use of symbolism in her painting 'Five'. We started with a fun activity where one student described the painting to another who drew it but couldn't see it! In our discussion afterwards, students showed their growing knowledge and skills in reading a piece of art and made some outstanding observations. And finally, we are of course spending time rehearsing for the play and learning the songs and dances which is already going with a bang!
