Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

In 2020 it became a statutory requirement for schools to deliver Relationships Education in primary schools. Today's children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.

At Orchard Primary School we use the SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) programme to deliver this part of the school curriculum.  This programme provides a framework and tools for developing a whole-school approach to improving children’s emotional health and wellbeing, helping to keep them safe, improve behaviour and raise achievement.

Teaching at school will complement and re-enforce (not replace) lessons which families teach their children as they grow up.  Children have the opportunity to ask questions or raise issues confidentially with staff.  We aim to answer children's questions thoughtfully and honestly, at an age-appropriate (or understanding-appropriate) level.

Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and parents should put their request in writing to the Head Teacher. Parents, however, may not withdraw their child from science lessons on reproduction which form part of the statutory National Curriculum.
